Do Not Turn to the Right or to the Left

I have found that it does not take much to shift my focus from Jesus to my problems in life, other people or worldly things. I am constantly reminding myself and praying, “Lord help me keep my focus on You.” We do not want to turn to the right or to the left, but straight at Jesus, following in obedience to His Word, so that we may be successful on our journey.

God told Joshua before they were about to cross over the Jordan River not to look to the right or to the left so that he may be successful wherever he goes. Joshua 1:7 – Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the law my servant Moses gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go (NIV).

The Israelites knew all about what it was like to shift their focus from God to idols or worldly things and not be obedient to His instructions. When they would shift their focus, they would cry out to God. God provided them with so much grace just like he does with us. But notice, the verse says so that you may be successful. Joshua and the Israelites were successful at listening to God and obtaining the land that God had promised them.

Success looks different for each of us. Maybe success looks like overcoming that addiction. Maybe success looks like a generational change. Maybe success is writing a book God put in your heart. Maybe it is taking that missions trip. Maybe success is finding the husband God has for you. Maybe it is starting that business you have always wanted to start. Not turning to the right or the left and keeping our eyes on God brings success! God wants to see us succeed!

Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for wanting us to be successful in life. I pray that my eyes stay focused on You and only You. In Jesus Name I Pray, Amen.
